Several photographs of people were reproduced from earlier portraits, including images of Louisa May Alcott (taken from a cabinet card), Nathaniel Hawthorne (taken from the Mayall portrait made in London in 1860) and Henry David Thoreau (made from the Dunshee ambrotype image).
